The mission of Haven is to provide
educational, social, and recreational
services to HIV youth to support healthy,
age-appropriate development and
transition into adulthood. Haven will
provide HIV youth with a recreational
facility to decrease social isolation,
improve self-concept/self-esteem,
enhance communication skills, and
encourage the development of healthy
peer relationships among a population
that may often feel stigmatized in other
community settings.
A recreational facility is an innovative
approach to psychological services
because it promotes the acquisition of key
developmental tasks like building
friendships, skill learning, self-evaluation
and team play; that are often overlooked
in the care of children with chronic illness.
In addition to the recreational activities
provided (e.g. pool tables, arcade games,
etc.), Haven will also offer groups,
workshops, and community service
opportunities for the youth and families
served.
